Digital Contract Withdrawal – How EU Directive 2023/2673 Will Change E-Commerce in 2026

From June 19, 2026, online store owners will need to prepare for important changes regarding consumers’ right to withdraw from distance contracts. While Directive (EU) 2023/2673 is primarily associated with financial services, it also introduces amendments to consumer protection rules that affect businesses concluding contracts online.

For e-commerce businesses, this means providing consumers with the ability to submit a withdrawal request directly through the store’s online interface. The purpose of the new rules is to ensure that withdrawing from a contract is as easy as entering into one.

What Changes on June 19, 2026?

The right to withdraw from a distance contract is not new. Consumers have long been entitled to withdraw from eligible purchases within 14 days without providing a reason.

What changes is the way this right must be exercised.

The new Article 11a of Directive 2011/83/EU requires traders to provide a functionality that allows consumers to submit a withdrawal statement directly through the trader’s website or application. This functionality must be easily accessible, clearly visible, and available throughout the period during which the consumer can exercise the right of withdrawal.

In practice, this means that online stores should not rely solely on:

  • an email address,
  • a downloadable PDF form,
  • information contained only in the terms and conditions.

Consumers should be able to submit their withdrawal statement directly through the store’s online interface.

What Should the Withdrawal Function Look Like?

The directive specifies that the functionality should be clearly labeled with wording such as “Withdraw from Contract Here” or another equally unambiguous phrase.

After entering the required information, the consumer should be presented with a separate confirmation step, for example a button labeled “Confirm Withdrawal”.

The trader must then promptly provide the consumer with confirmation of receipt of the withdrawal statement on a durable medium, including the date and time of submission. In most cases, this will be delivered by email.

Are E-Commerce Platforms Ready for the New Requirements?

Most e-commerce platforms do not currently include a built-in feature that fully satisfies all requirements introduced by the new legislation.

Today, many online stores still handle withdrawals through:

  • contact forms,
  • email requests,
  • downloadable PDF forms,
  • third-party return management systems.

However, not all of these methods provide:

  • an easily accessible withdrawal interface,
  • the ability to submit a withdrawal statement online,
  • automatic recording of the submission date and time,
  • immediate confirmation on a durable medium.

As a result, many store owners are already evaluating what technical and procedural changes may be required before June 2026.

How Can Online Stores Prepare?

The most practical solution is a dedicated withdrawal form integrated directly with the store’s order management system.

Such a solution allows customers to:

  • enter their order number,
  • verify their email address,
  • select products covered by the withdrawal,
  • submit the withdrawal statement online,
  • receive automatic confirmation of submission.

This approach not only helps businesses comply with the upcoming requirements but also streamlines customer service operations.

Our Solution for E-Commerce Stores

To help merchants prepare for the upcoming changes, we have developed a dedicated digital withdrawal solution that can be integrated with online stores.

The solution includes:

  • an online withdrawal form,
  • support for full and partial contract withdrawals,
  • automatic email confirmations,
  • recording of the date and time of submission,
  • an administrative management panel,
  • internal notes and status tracking,
  • CSV export functionality,
  • a complete history of withdrawal requests.

The entire process can be managed digitally, providing both merchants and customers with a clear and transparent workflow.

Don’t Wait Until the Last Minute

Although the new rules will apply from June 19, 2026, it is worth preparing in advance.

For many businesses, compliance may require:

  • updating terms and conditions,
  • reviewing customer service procedures,
  • implementing new technical features,
  • training employees responsible for returns and withdrawals.

The earlier these changes are introduced, the easier it will be to avoid rushed implementations close to the compliance deadline.

Summary

Directive (EU) 2023/2673 does not change the consumer’s fundamental right to withdraw from a contract. Instead, it changes how businesses must enable consumers to exercise that right in a digital environment.

From June 19, 2026, consumers will be able to submit withdrawal statements directly through the online interface of a store. For e-commerce businesses, this means reviewing existing withdrawal processes and implementing solutions that meet the new requirements.
