Where does WooCommerce come from?

WooCommerce was born in 2011 as a project by the agency WooThemes, which initially specialized mainly in creating design themes. Technically, the plugin started as a “fork” of another e-commerce system existing at the time called JigoShop. Two key developers, Mike Jolley and Jay Koster, were hired to transform this code into the independent and powerful product we know today.

A pivotal moment occurred in 2015 when Automattic (the creators of WordPress) acquired WooCommerce, integrating it closely into their ecosystem. This acquisition provided the platform with the stable technological and financial backing necessary for its further global expansion. Today, thanks to these solid foundations, it stands as the most frequently chosen e-commerce solution in the world.
